Introduction

It is the 8th of November, 2021. Welcome to episode 18 of the Delivering Development podcast, helping language teachers and others in the field to enhance their professional development. My name is Kevin Westbrook, and today I have a special guest – Rachael Roberts.

After 30 years in ELT, as a teacher, teacher trainer, manager and materials writer, Rachael Roberts now works as a business and mindset coach for other ELT professionals, helping her clients to earn more, work less, and live more fully.

She works with clients 1-2-1 and on her 12 week small group programme for self-employed ELT Professionals (coaches, teachers, trainers, writers, editors) Switch off Stress, Switch on Success.

I started noticing her name on LinkedIn a while ago, and then I saw that she is a course writer on a platform I am starting to write for. Then I heard her being interviewed on a podcast I subscribe to – Developod – the podcast of the IATEFL TDSig.

It was that podcast that led to me contacting Rachael. I have had a feeling for some time now that we have sometimes been taking the wrong perspective about the advice to language teachers in the area of mindfulness and other areas such as positive mindset, growth mindset and so on. It often seems to be treating the symptoms, not the cause. We had a great chat a few weeks ago and I am happy that she agreed to take part in one of our podcasts.

Topics

Kevin – seems to me that many articles, presentations etc. I have experienced about mental health put the affected person in the position of a passive adapter to a bad situation, one that is usually caused by an external agent such as an employer. The advice is to practice, for example, mindfulness, to help cope with that bad situation. That seemed wrong to me.

Rachael – Mindfulness is an active process…
